Bloc Hotel – Gatwick Airport

Having an 07:30 flight out of Gatwick we looked at several possible options:

1. Get up before the crack of dawn, drive to Gatwick and cough up for long term parking.

2. Find a local hotel that offers parking too.

During this search we discovered that the Bloc Hotel offered us a cracking deal. They have rooms really close to the airport – like, IN the terminal close. And the price for the room included valet car parking too.

So, we booked up for a night in Gatwick’s South Terminal.

Valet parking was a doddle. Drive in to the red car park, drop the keys off in reception and walk across the road into departures. Simple.

Reception at the Bloc Hotel is opposite Cafe Nero just before security. It’s well signposted too.

Warm and friendly welcome from the guy on the desk and an upgrade to a window room too. Our room was small, but that’s what Block is about. The lights, blinds and air conditioning etc. are controlled by a tablet on the bedside table; it’s a little fiddly, but it worked ok.

Wet-room shower was neat, all very compact; just make sure you don’t leave the toilet roll exposed as everything gets wet when you shower!

Bed was comfortable.

The room was clean and despite being in an airport, it was quiet too.

Just two bottles of water in the room but there is plenty of choice available in the airport and the Bloc welcome booklet has discount coupons to a lot of outlets.

Overall I was dead impressed and would highly recommend it if you have an early departure from Gatwick.

Catching up…

What with traveling for work AND traveling for pleasure, catching up on these travel pages is sometimes way down on the list of things ‘to-do’.

Today, here I am sat in my Lima apartment, avoiding the noon-day sun, finding the time to catch up on a few of these missing travel pages.

A recent work trip out to Khartoum, Sudan and a lovely weekend out in Granda, Spain.

Watch this space as they say !!!

It’s that time of year…

One more sleep and it’s vacation time!

Mrs Young is a school teacher, meaning our vacations always have to fit around term time and hence always cost a lot more than the weeks either side of the school holiday. But hey, what the heck, stop complaining, we’re going on VACATION !!!!
Tomorrow at 16:00 BST, we’re headed back to our second home, Helen, GA.
Nestled way up on the tail of the Appalachians it’s here that we find solace. Peace. Tranquillity. It’s a place to recharge our batteries. A place to recharge our soul.

Spending two weeks in one place with Mrs Young is pure delight.

One Bag Travelling

Inspired by a Tweet from fellow travellers @LoveandRoad and @ChiefFrugalista I thought I’d post my experience on the subject of travelling with one bag, or more specifically, one ‘carry on’ bag.

I wholeheartedly agree with travelling as lightly as possible and with Mrs Young have successfully toured China and Japan with nothing more that a carry-on sized suitcase. It can be done easily, with a little thought, and makes travelling so much easier when you have just one case to haul around.

My work sends me all around the globe and I’ve been lucky to have traveled to a LOT of different places. Usually for a week, sometimes two, but I always check-in just one suitcase, a medium sized, semi-rigid Timberland case that carries everything I need just nicely and even when full to busting, weighs in at under 23kg.

These days I get very irritated by the increasing number of passengers selfishly carrying cases on to aircraft that are obviously way over the recommended guidelines, both in weight and size, filling up the overhead bins in one go, not caring that other fellow passengers might actually need some space too. This is a controversial topic and I know gets most frequent travellers talking.

My current work project sees me travelling to Lima. A LOT!

Every three weeks sees me making the long haul trip out to Jorge Chavez Airport in Lima, via Madrid. I now have an apartment to use rather than shacking up in a hotel every trip, which is really nice and homely after a busy day at work. This luxury also brings with it the benefit of not having to carry all of my work clothes to and from home every trip allowing me to leave some things like shirts, trousers and larger toiletries in the apartment.

With this in mind I thought that I’d try travelling with just ONE carry-on case plus my usual laptop shoulder bag. Well within the baggage guidelines of most airlines.

What could be simpler?

My usual route out to Lima sees me leaving the amazing T5 at London Heathrow and transiting through Madrid and it’s this security pinch-point that is the source of all of my travel problems.

Security must be cleared once again before picking up my onward flight to Lima and the people that perform this task are the most officious and obnoxious people I’ve ever had the misfortune to encounter in all of my globe-trotting travels. Every single trip, nine so far, these officious, unhappy, non-smiling, unhelpful security people have pulled me over for some minor infringement. Questioning me on items like a box of chocolates, a packet of biscuits, a small screwdriver set, loose change, chewing gum and even a prepacked salad. I have had a few items confiscated like screwdrivers, travel tool-kits and other non-dangerous hand tools that Heathrow security didn’t even flinch at. Sadly though this securty procedure is an inconsistent one as some items being picked out as problematic on one search would then be totally ignored on another, so the whole process is completely random and entirely dependant on who is observing the scanner.
So when my first trip trialing the use of just a carry-on case arrived, I was hopeful it would all work seamlessly, saving me precious time at either end of my journey and avoiding having to wait for my case to appear on the carousel.

Sadly, the experiment failed. Having to navigate this security hurdle at Madrid Airport is such a painful experience that after just two trips I gave up the whole experiment. The hassle of being pulled up and unpacking and repacking my suitcase each time is really not worth that amount of aggravation. I fear that one day I will eventually miss my connection.

Now it’s back to checking in my trusty ol’ Timberland case at the check-in desk as usual and negotiating Madird security with just my laptop bag that STILL gets searched every trip.

Oh the joys of a jet-set lifestyle eh?

On the road again…

Well and truly in to 2016 now and once again I’m in transit, currently enjoying the Iberia lounge in Madrid airport while I wait for my connection to Lima, Peru. Work and the travelling associated with has been crazy with a three weekly rotation in and out of Lima with my colleague Mike, so this route, flying on a Sunday, is pretty familiar now. British Airways provides the early morning ‘hop’ to Madrid before flying with Iberia to Lima. Flying time in total is around 14 hours, so my Sunday is pretty much lost in mid-air over the Atlantic. With all the travelling I’ve earned access to the lounges which is a real blessing. Being able to escape the crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet and a drink or two is close to heavenly. It took seven years of travel to earn it though, so I’m enjoying this ‘perk’ every chance I get.

So, with my second Cortado in hand, I now look towards to second leg of my trip and twelve hours in the air to Lima.

I’ll catch up with  some details of Lima during this trip as I’ve neglected it somewhat, I guess over familiarisation with a journey dulls ones inclination to write about it.

Adios!

2015 – It’s a wrap!

So as another year draws to a close it feels like a good time to reflect on just how fortunate we have been over the last year and now excitedly anticipate adventures to come in 2016.

Last January we were eagerly looking forward to our visit to China and, although at the time we were not overly impressed with it, we now look back with disbelief at the number of amazing experiences we crammed into our short visit.

We could never have predicted the biggest opportunity we were given this year – working in Peru. My wife made the decision to stay in England whilst I commuted back and forth. However, as somebody who is always looking to visit new destinations, she crazily flew to Lima for a week!

The main question on our minds now, is – what will 2016 hold for us? We have learnt over recent years that only the big man upstairs truly knows but we will continue to seize every opportunity we are given.

Our plans for the first half of the year will fit in around my regular commutes to Lima, hopefully with another flying visit from my wife. We already have plans for a visit to Iceland in February in the hopes that we will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the elusive Northern Lights, this is most definitely a bucket list trip. In late March we are off to Malaysia, one of my favourite work destinations, with a side trip to Borneo in the hope we will see some Orang Utans.

We feel so blessed to be able to experience such wonderful places and people, in doing so it affirms our belief that the world is made up of kind, considerate and caring people. If travel does nothing else it reminds us just how alike we all are.

Happy New Year and a prosperous and well travelled 2016.
