Day Two (Dia dos)

We woke early due to the time change and headed down to breakfast which was laid out in what was once the tango salon’s bar area.

Today we’re checking out and heading to Uruguay and had timed our ferry crossing so that we didn’t need to check out of our room earlier than we needed to.

Using UBER our driver took us swiftly through the morning traffic to the Colonia Express ferry terminal. Both Argentinian and Uruguayan passport control desks were across the corridor from each other, so we exited one country and entered another within two paces! Boarded our ferry on time and departed on schedule for a smooth 70 minute crossing across the River Plate to Colonia del Sacramento.

Our next hotel, the Pasada las Terrazas, was an easy 10 minute walk, from what looked to be a fairly new terminal building.

Having left behind a bustling and noisy Buenos Aries we were instantly struck by the peace and quiet of Colonia’s tree lined cobbled streets. We checked into Pasada las Terrazas, being greeted warmly and shown to our room where we dropped off our cases and headed swiftly out to explore.

Having already researched Albertine Pan y Cafe, and feeling more than a little peckish, we entered the small cafe and luckily found an empty table. The flat capped barista took time to explain the simple food menu, teas and artisan coffees as well as taking time to chat, asking us about our journey. Everything about this quirky cafe made tracking it down worthwhile.

Fortified, we set off in to the old town, getting lost in the maze of cobbled streets – unbelievably more uneven than the streets of Pompeii! Every street and plaza seemed to be more photogenic than the last and we soon fell for the towns old fashioned charm.

The receptionist advised heading down to the waterfront to catch the evenings sunset. With the days clear skies, the dying sun sank below the horizon to a round of applause from the assembled crowd.

Leaving the bustling waterfront we headed back towards our hotel, accidentally stopping at the Colonia Sandwich Coffee Shop, another venue on our hit-list, for a quick sandwich and a cold beer followed by a submarino and cortado night cap before finally heading back to the hotel for a well earned sleep.
