Wanting to experience and stay deep in Beijings hutongs, we found this little gem. We arranged a taxi pick-up from the station when we booked which turned out to be a member of staff who collected us in the arrivals hall and travelled back with us in the taxi. Truly an authentic experience without the language worry. He was also able to direct us through the narrow alleys rather than have us dropped off on the main road. The Orchid is a tardis-like hotel at the end of a narrow, cluttered alleyway. Reception was modern – busy, overlooking a small courtyard garden – staff welcomed us like long-lost friends, with a drink and a chat on comfortable sofas. The rooms were set over a number of staggered floors topped off with a rooftop restaurant. Our room was just across the courtyard and had its own small interior garden. It was spotlessly clean and, although compact, it definitely proved that size really doesn’t matter. The bathroom was modern and had really luxurious toiletries along with a powerful shower. The TV had Apple TV and free movies but we only used it briefly as the hotel was such a sociable place to hang out. It was difficult to believe the chaos of the hutong was literally at the end of the alley because the staff and ethos of the building made us feel so calm and relaxed. Breakfast was taken in the roof top restaurant with spectacular views over the hutong; there were seven different breakfast options from fruit and granola to an amazing breakfast shake, everything cooked and made fresh-to-order. Perhaps the best part of breakfast was the communal feel, encouraging conversation amongst fellow guests. The restaurant was very popular and we were unable to get a reservation during our stay although we did partake in the dumpling making class which was a highlight of the entire stay. The cost may seem extravagant but there was never-ending food and drink as well as an opportunity to get to meet and get to know fellow travelers from all over the world.
No review could truly express how special The Orchid is. It has amazing, caring service and perfect accommodation but its real strength is that you arrive a stranger and by the time you leave you have become inextricably linked with people that you are unlikely to ever meet again. Nothing is too much trouble, from arranging drivers and trips to chatting over coffee or a beer in the cosy reception area. You truly feel like part of the family.
PROS: Too many to list. Perfect for independent travelers who enjoy socializing with like minded people.
CONS: Restaurant booking can be difficult to come by.
