Again, searching for unusual and quirky hotels in our destination city, we ended up with a bit of dilemma on our hands. The more trendy boutique style of hotel tended to be a long way out of the City, like at the back of St Peter’s Basilica, which would then make it awkward to see the other side of Rome or they were just horrifically expensive. One of our criteria on this trip was to be near enough to the majority of the tourist sites to be able to do them on foot. We found the Residenza Ki, well reviewed on a variety of review sites like TripAdvisor and booking on-line direct with the hotel, our reasonably priced package included a buffet breakfast. We added an airport pick-up too as our BA flight arrived late in the evening and we didn’t want to be wandering around the city looking for the hotel. Our pick-up driver looking like a Mafia henchman with his shades and silver hair, said very little and drove through the beautifully lit City like Lewis Hamilton! We pulled up roadside where he leapt from the car muttering something we both missed, vanishing up a side street. He reappeared minutes later with a smartly dress guy in tow, the manager of the Ki with the keys to the hotel and our room. The front desk closed at 9:00PM and we were trusted to let ourselves in. A very unusual start to our trip.
PROS: Literally two minutes walk to the Trevi Fountain. Quiet location. Good buffet breakfast. Friendly staff. Lots of good restaurants and coffee shops nearby. Handy convenience store across the street. Very clean. Close to Metro station.
CONS: Hard to find independently. Lots of stairs up to reception – NOT on street level. Private residential floors in same building were easily confused with the hotel floors. No tea/coffee making in rooms. Some room doors open straight in to breakfast room. Fairly basic accommodation.
