In a crazy city like Shanghai we were looking for some affordable peace and quiet with an inclusive breakfast. We wanted to be away from the craziness of the Bund yet close to transport links. The Quintet was situated in the French Concession area just a short walk from two subway stations servicing three different metro lines. There was plenty of choice for restaurants as well as shops. The entrance was through a totally unmarked door leading into an internal courtyard; only the name label on the door bell had the hotel name visible. The building is residential with five rooms situated up a narrow staircase and spread across the lower floors. Our room (Grand Cathay) was two storeys up and had a steep narrow staircase leading up to the bathroom. The room was homely, clean and functional. The main sleeping area was large with a sitting area and table for tea as well as beautiful traditional French doors opening on to a Juliet balcony that allowed the gentle breeze and bustle of the street to fill the room. The building was tranquil with only the occasional sounds of returning guests on the wooden stairs. Breakfast was served overlooking the garden in the conservatory. There were three choices of breakfast (all visible on website) all freshly prepared in the open kitchen. Kenny, the owner, was at breakfast during our stay but, despite reviews describing how amazing he was, we received nothing more than a polite greeting. We are certain he would would have assisted had we required anything but we were more than happy with our stay.
PROS: Peaceful. Great location for exploring. Large room. Small rooftop terrace. Breakfast choices cooked to order. Comfortable bed. Easy access to public transport.
CONS: Not close to the Bund. May have difficulty manoeuvring large suitcases up stairs. Guesthouse door sign easy to miss.
