Great breakfast sat by the tree shaded pool then off out to explore the city.

TukTuk drivers are waiting outside the hotel and driver No9 was ours for the day, first stop Tuol Sleng or the S51 Genocide Museum. Here you can find out about the horrendous activities of Pol Pott and his regime. What was once a school was turned in to a torture and interrogation camp. Barbaric and harrowing and no words can truly describe it, but it is essential to carry this story home and share your memories of it to stop it happening again.

No9 then took us out to the edge of the city to the Choeung Ek Killing Field where the tortured S51 captives were executed and buried. This is one of thousand’s of fields used. Again, horrific and incomprehensible. Our guide showed us teeth and bones uncovered by heavy rain in the soil and pointed out the killing tree, used to batter babies against and the razor sharp bamboo leaves used to slit throats as it was cheaper than bullets! Again, words fail to describe man’s inhumanity to his fellow man.

After contemplating all that we had seen during the day we hopped back in to TukTuk No9 and set off to explore the night market where we left with only a sarong and a T-shirt. Dinner was grabbed in a tiny restaurant where the friendly service was as delightful as the food.
