Matsubaya Ryokan – Kyoto

When looking for a traditional ryokan, Kyoto is probably the best place to look. The price range though is astonishing with greater inflation the closer you get to Gion. We wanted to enjoy Kyoto but were prepared to walk rather than blow our budget for location. Matsubaya Ryokan was a relatively short walk from Kyoto Station, situated in a quiet residential street. Check-in was efficient and very friendly despite no common language. Clear house rules were politely modelled as we were given a guided tour. The room was a standard 6 tatami traditional style with a small bathroom.  Futon and bedding was neatly folded in the corner with yukata provided along with a low Japanese table set for Japanese tea. The confusing tradition of changing slippers for different situations was explained and appropriate slippers provided. Traditional Japanese breakfast had to be booked 24 hours in advance and availability was limited so we only managed one of them during our stay. It was delicious though, served at a communal table in the main lobby.  Despite the futon bed looking basic and uncomfortable it was perfect and gave us the best night’s sleep of the entire holiday.  The entire building felt calm and welcoming. Check-out was smooth and as a parting gift we were both resented with a pack of individually wrapped chopsticks.

PROS: Spotlessly clean. Incredibly comfortable bed. Delicious traditional breakfast. Traditional building in quiet residential area. Close to Kyoto Station. Helpful staff.

CONS: Need to be prepared to walk to Gion. Book early to guarantee your Japanese breakfast.
