Lanarca – Cyprus

Larnaca

During the cold snap and deep snow of January 2010, I was lucky enough to have to spend three weeks in Larnaca Cyprus. For me, daytime temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees was a delight and my shorts and t-shirts got an early airing. For my students though, mostly Cypriot Army engineers, it was winter and freezing cold and would sit in my lessons with overcoats and woolly hats.

I stayed in the 4-star beach-side Lordos Beach Hotel. Being winter season it was pretty quite. More like VERY quiet. Me and a few Eastern block visitors made up the handful of guests at dinner and breakfast. During the second week a visit from a Spanish football team filled the reception area with players on laptops using the hotel WiFi to contact family and loved ones at home.

The hotel was lovely and with so few guests they got to know you quickly and were very attentive.

Larnaca though was a little dull as most of it was closed for the winter. Tourist and architectural sites were all shut, only viewable from behind railings or from a distance. To be honest it was a little disappointing. Seeing the North/South divide ‘UN Buffer Zone‘ up close was haunting though, and scary to think it was such a recent a battle and seeing the resort of Ayia Napa shut for the winter were pretty much the only highlights.
