Kaohsiung – Taiwan

My first trip East, teaching the Taiwan Airforce to use our PinPoint Testers and the first MONSTER flight, 12.5 hours to Hong Kong on British Airways then a short 90 minute hop to Kaohsiung using Dragon Air. Met by my host at the airport I was whisked to my hotel, the very comfortable Hotel King’s Town, a business hotel in down town Kaohsiung right across from the railway station.Friendly hotel staff, quiet room, comfy bed and great buffet breakfast too. Perfect.

Driving out to Ping Tun Airport every day was a bit of hike, about 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic, but it meant I got to see some of the surrounding area during the drive.

My host, Allan, often stopped for coffee on the way, sometimes his breakfast too and more often than not to pick up a pack of Betel Nuts, a natural green leaf ‘upper’ that turned his teeth and mouth bright red. Adjacent to our hotel was a superb coffee store, 85 Cafe, who are the Starbucks of Taiwan who seal the top of your drink with a film so it doesn’t spill in the car. Genius idea.

Loved Kaohsiung. Loved the food. Loved the atmosphere. Weather was very hot and very sticky. Flight home was over night, so spent Saturday seeing some sights like the World Games Stadium, the Sky Tower and enjoyed the amazingly decorated underground stations on the Metro.
