Il Borgo di Genova – Genoa

Our continuous avoidance of tourist hotels led us to this little gem. Situated just behind the main railway station it was a million miles from the tourist hotspots. Accessed through a pedestrian tunnel running under the station that comes out in to a narrow street inhabited by locals. This very ordinary town house was sandwiched between small businesses and other unremarkable houses. The door led to a Tardis-like home up a narrow flight of stairs. Our room was huge with a large area for relaxing and a view across the local rooftops. As the owner’s wife had recently given birth there was no breakfast on offer, but the owner had kindly offered us the opportunity to cancel our booking prior to our arrival. Giovanni, the owner, spent a long time introducing us to his city and making recommendations for restaurants and places to see. As the only guests we were given our own door key and the building was ours. The room was clean, bright and peaceful; a great place to relax between sightseeing trips.

PROS: Great location, within walking distance of trains to rest of Italy. Short walk to city centre. Giovanni and his HUGE enthusiasm for his city. Spotlessly clean. Large room.

CONS: Not city centre. Unable to comment on breakfast. Stairs narrow and steep so need to be careful especially descending.
