With Berlin being a bit of a trendy destination we were spoilt for choice when it came to finding quirky hotels, but we always try to spend no more than £500 on a short break – which this trip looked like it was going to be impossible. However, we found a newly opened hotel in the old Jewish Quarter and as we have discovered previously this is when their rates are at their most competitive, to encourage some positive reviews.
Hotel Amano had a trendy lobby filled with industrial-looking art but check-in wasn’t particularly friendly. It was clear they didn’t feel we fitted their ideal demographic but we didn’t care. The room was clean and very comfortable although our window looked directly into an office block across the sreet that appeared to be occupied 24/7. Our room didn’t include breakfast but we found a couple of great bakeries nearby which proved much cheaper than using the hotel. The hotel had its own fleet of bicycles which was a great way to see the city and gave us a completely different perspective on the city.
PROS: Spotlessly clean. Great location not in the real tourist area but giving a peak into a different part of Berlin. Great transport links nearby. Bikes to hire. Near to some great independent bakeries and shops.
CONS: Breakfast very expensive. Disinterested staff. Don’t expect a great room view.
