Over the last nine years both of our daughters have lived in, or are still living in, Leeds and neighbouring Huddersfield attending University’s and Music Colleges, so finding somewhere nice to stay other than resorting to a Travelodge, Premier Inn or Ibis hotels is not easy. We have used them in the past but we would rather find somewhere a little more comfortable for long weekends.
So, Googling around Mrs Y found the Heritage Suites, and when we found it it was still pretty new. Being converted from an old Mill it has character by the bucket load and consists of various sized serviced apartments, some themed, some not. Some big ones and some not so big. Booking is easy, like a regular hotel but you get a comfortable room that has somewhere to sit, with a kitchenette where you can prepare food and drinks if you don’t want to use the on-site restaurant/coffee shop or pop out to eat.
Perched on top of a hill on the outskirts of Huddersfield, with stunning views of surrounding hills and countryside, it takes just five minutes to drive down in to Huddersfield, and ten minutes to walk to the recently renovated and glorious Greenhead Park which is well worth a visit.
PROS: Loads of space. Mini-kitchenette. Good use of well restored mill. Good location. Very clean. Well fitted out. Good email and Twitter response. Reasonable price for room and services. Comfortable with a home-from-home feel to it.
CONS: Our room at the front over-looked the main road, it was well laid out, but lacks privacy as it has no window covering for it’s large windows. During our visit the weather was very warm and sunny. As we sat enjoying the spectacular views during the day, but we had no idea that at night it would be so warm in the room that we had to have all the windows open to keep it cool, this meant we were then disturbed by the constant traffic noise. We must say that this is an exception to the rule as the other rooms we have used during other stays don’t suffer from this problem at all. One other minor ‘con’ to an otherwise brilliant location is that parking can be a little awkward. the owner-occupied apartments all have an allotted numbered space, but rental apartment users park end up parking anywhere they can.
