Ecuador – El Monte – Day 2

Up early for a pre-breakfast dawn walk to catch the dawn-chorus. Tom our host appeared and we headed out in to the forest, just a short walk from the main lodge. It was wonderful catch the forest waking up from it’s slumber.

After a quick shower and a change of clothes it was back to the lodge for our communal breakfast. Joined once again by the American families we enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast and some lovely chat with our hosts and fellow guests. Plans for the day were chewed over and once again our guide John appeared, we donned our wellies again heading out in to the forest to see what we could see.

John’s knowledge of the local area and his ability to spot the smallest creature was astonishing. Again we spotted all types of birds and fauna. Again, the elusive Quetzal remained just that. Elusive. We could once again hear them, with John calling to it. But the owner of the call remained hidden.

After a quick freshen up it was back for lunch with just Tom and Mariela as our fellow guests had left for home which left us as the only guests.

Our afternoon was spent relaxing on the deck of the lodge as the earlier shower had turned to a downpour. We cozied up on the comfy sofas and chairs, reading, drinking tea and bird watching. Watching the clouds drifting across the forest was mesmerizing.

The cook appeared just as the sun started to fade, stacking a few logs in the fire pit. We moved to chairs around the pit and enjoyed a fresh cuppa and the warmth from the fire.

Again, Tom and Mariella joined us at the long table and we enjoyed a delightful meal and great chat late in to the evening.

We headed back through the light rain under our umbrella and snuggled down in our comfy cabana to the background sounds of the river.
