Day Five (Dia cinco)

With our hotel not offering breakfast, we strolled up the road to a tiny cafe, Che.Co.Ffee. Ordering toast with marmalade, tea and a couple of cortados we were soon ready to tackle Montevideo.

Heading up town we were distracted by an amazing bookshop, Libraría mas Puro Verso dating back to 1917, it oozed charm, stacked with books, stained glass windows, a sweeping ornate staircase and a cafe on the first floor. Discovering the cafe offered a vegetarian/vegan menu we vowed to return to dine.

Heading along Av. 18 Julio our plan was to ascend the Intendencia de Montevideo building to view the city from its viewing platform, sadly though, it was closed for maintenance, we therefore headed back down the road towards the old town. Taking a short break at Plaza de Ing. Juan Pedro Fabini, to enjoy the sunshine.

Our journey across town took us to the Mercado del Puerto just in time to enjoy some empañadas for lunch.

Following a brief siesta back at the hotel we then spent the evening back in Plaza de Ing. Juan Pedro Fabini hoping to catch some Tango which we had heard often happened in the evenings, but sadly, nothing materialised so we headed back to the hotel to take a nightcap from the drinks trolley. Tonight we met a fellow guest, a Finnish guy, living in Luxembourg. travelling with his family. We chatted for a while about travelling and journeys before retiring with a cuppa!
