We booked a private car for the three hour transfer up to Battambang using an online service, Bookaway, our car arrived promptly and we arrived at the Sanctuary Villa pretty much exactly on time to check in.
First task was booking a TukTuk driver to help us see the sights of Battambang contacting a well rated driver called Nicky, he replied quickly to our Facebook mesasge saying “Yes, he was free for both the days that we were in Battambang”, so we rapidly secured his driving services.
Battambang is the home of the Phare Circus, the school where all the circus training takes place. The show is a way of giving the students an opportunity to showcase their skills in front of a live paying audience and we were advised as we purchased our tickets, that the show would not be as polished as the Siem Riep show we had already seen – ‘they may drop things and fall over…’ said the ticket agent. Hopping into the hotel TukTuk, we were dropped off at the Phare gates at the end of an incredibly potholed and bumpy lane. We were able to pick up tickets without any trouble, so grabbed a couple of beers and some snacks before taking our seats in the big top. Our high expectations did not need adjusting at all, despite the ticket guys warning, the show may have lacked some of the more skillful acrobatics, but the fire juggling and flaming skipping rope section were just as spectacular.
