Once again we used various unusual search words in Google like ‘funky’ and ‘quirky’ for our hotel search. This time, after a thorough cross-reference against reviews in TripAdvisor and other hotel review sites, we decided on the Acta Mimic Hotel. Reasoning behind it this time was again, close proximity to the Metro, walking distance to sites, and not too close to the tourist centre of the city, especially not too close to Las Ramblas. Managed to get a good deal from the hotel website.
The Mimic will not be to everyone’s taste. I must say that we both loved it. A very minimalist style room with FULL width frosted windows. Hence the room was very light and airy. There is a screen across the front of the hotel which allows you to see out, but gives you, the occupier, full privacy. There are no blinds across the window, with just a blackout curtain across the bedroom area. The toilet is separate, by the door, and is like a dark cupboard.
Corridors of the hotel are very dim, lit only by the illuminated red numbers outside of each room. Very effective and artistic.
We visited Barcelona in October 2010 during a half-term break and the weather was pretty much perfect, t-shirt weather and even ice creams on the beach. In October, it was SUCH a treat.
PROS: Very close to everything. Walking distance to most attractions with the Metro giving access to further afield. Really good buffet breakfast. The downstairs lounge has sofas, a TV, bar and a nice library of design based books. Quiet location. Staff friendly enough. Good WiFi connection. Lovely roof terrace with good city view.
CONS: Nothing major here. Bar staff didn’t understand English tea, making it with hot milk instead of hot water !!! A little awkward to find as the logo/name wasn’t that obvious. We arrived after dark and thought it looked like an office and walked passed it.
