5Twenty@AmpangHilir – Kuala Lumpur

Not wanting to pay the sky-high prices for KL hotels, we looked around at other types of accommodation and found this guesthouse just a short distance from the Petronas Towers. Located in a residential area populated with very opulent (enormous) homes amongst a number of foreign embassies. There was a security guarded gated entrance leading to, what appeared to be, a complex of up-market townhouses. Car parking was secure and allocated to each townhouse which meant that our car was sheltered from the intense heat. The townhouse was divided into a number of individual rooms, with a communal living area on the first floor leading to a balcony overlooking the pool. There was direct access from the balcony to the pool area through a small garden. Access to the pool was only through one of the townhouses and a double key system was in place – residents of each townhouse had a main entrance door key and also an individual room key. The ground floor was only for entrance and customary shoe changing; there was no accommodation on this floor. Our room was large, furnished minimally with a view towards the Petronas Towers (mainly obscured by trees though!) and had French doors leading to a balcony. The bathroom was clean and well-equipped with a good shower.

Considering we were just seconds from the main road through KL, the building was silent and a great place to leave the bustle of the city behind. The pool was well-maintained, clean and easy to access. During our stay we only had to share it once, so despite being available to all the surrounding houses it felt like our own private pool (5 Twenty only have one block of houses with the others either individually owned or run by similar groups). The most memorable thing was returning in the evening and swimming after dark in the cool water. Such a great way to cool down. Breakfast was cooked to order and delivered either to your balcony overlooking the pool or in a communal dining room; we opted for the balcony each day. We chose a Malaysian breakfast each morning and found it too much to eat! The service was perfect and allowed us the freedom we wanted whilst making sure we didn’t want for anything. Esther, the receptionist, went out of her way to make sure our stay was perfect; even checking how much taxis were charging us in case we were being overcharged! This guesthouse made a crazy city accessible and was pretty much faultless. In fact, our only slight annoyance was the number of bugs flying around the room although there was no mosquito net!

PROS: Very substantial breakfast. Friendly, helpful staff. Secure car parking. Well maintained pool. Large room. Calm and quiet environment.

CONS: We walked to Petronas Towers but in the heat you need to use local taxis to get everywhere. Bugs in room (may have only been our room).

Hotel Website: No website, only a Facebook page. Make contact through there too.
